WHy I Teach
I was born to teach. Over the past 20 years, I have worked or volunteered teaching and mentoring at risk youth through various organizational affiliations. I've tutored 4th-8th graders in math and reading. I've organized and facilitated Christian workshops, life skills coaching sessions, family fun outings, and outreach activities. All of these experiences created the path, that has lead me to the teacher I am today.
....After years of working in corporate America, I chose to become a teacher because I became a mother. My children's inquisitive nature and zest for learning reminded me how large and new our world is to young minds. Teachers serve as conduits of information, experiences and perspectives whose job is to help young learners explore their own thinking to make sense of the world around them.
My reason for becoming a teacher is rooted in my firm belief that every child can learn, and every child deserves a quality education, like my kids have. When President Obama raised the battle cry for good teachers, I knew it was time to stop sitting on the sidelines and become a participant in the real change I want to see in our educational system.
I teach because standards of educational achievement should not be dictated by the social limits of race, class, religion or ethnicity. I teach because all students deserve a quality and safe learning environment. I teach because all students should be given ample and meaningful opportunities to question, debate, reflect, problem solve and make mistakes. I teach because all students should be collaborators in their own education. I teach because all students deserve a highly qualified teacher.
So ultimately, the question is not why I teach. The question is how could I not?
